The International Association of Chiefs of Police recently held their Women’s Leadership Institute training in Saratoga Springs, NY. Once again, NYWLE was able to award a scholarship to an active member of NYWLE. Lt Rochelle Menard, from the Village of Depew Police Department, was this year’s scholarship winner, while NYWLE Board Members Chief Erika Taylor, NYS University Upstate and T/Lt. Kim Shappy, New York State Police, were also in attendance for this valuable training.

This one-week program not only allows participants the opportunity to learn from senior law enforcement leaders, but also provides a wonderful networking opportunity for attendees to meet women serving law enforcement agencies within the United States and abroad. Participants included 45 women from New York, Illinois, New Mexico, Indiana, and Washington, DC, as well as international students from Toronto, Bermuda, the Caribbean, and Serbia.

A highlight of the week features a panel of successful women leaders who share their stories about how they rose through the ranks to achieve their positions. These panelists along with instructors then serve as mentors for the students, each of whom presents a personal ‘plan’ for their future goals receiving advice about how to ensure their success. Special thanks to our own Board member Commissioner Mary Ritayik, New York State University Police Department, who served as a mentor for attendees.

“The most valuable portion of this training to me was the emphasis on leadership and followership responsibilities at every level,” said Board member Erika Taylor. “I strongly believe in top down, bottom-up leadership and will share what I learned with those from my department.” Erika added “I have spent a lot of time reflecting on the material and information over the last week and plan to implement a lot of the information in a monthly training program I will hold for my people at our Departmental meetings throughout 2024.

NYWLE Board member Kim Shappy added “I have been wanting to go to this training for some time now. I have always heard such great things and it did not disappoint. I think a lot of us are driven to do better and want to accomplish positive change not only for ourselves but our agency and followers as well.”

Scholarship winner Rochelle Menard commented, “After being promoted in June 2021 I was never given any leadership training and to be honest the (2) weeks of supervisor school did not teach me how to be a supervisor or a leader. I spent a lot of time during the week of WLI self-reflecting on not only how I see myself as a leader, but also how my officers and superiors see me as a leader”, adding, “I sincerely appreciate being selected as the scholarship awardee and being given the opportunity to the attend the WLI. Coming from a smaller department where the training budget can be tight, I would not have been able to attend without the scholarship. My utmost gratitude to NYWLE for making my attendance happen.”

Your NYWLE Board of Directors is committed to providing training opportunities like this to further the careers of our members. We rely on our membership dues to help fund initiatives such as this one. The more members we can get to join NYWLE, the more opportunities we will be able to offer for you! Who can you get to join today?

How does heart disease affect women?

Despite increases in awareness over the past decades, only about half (56%) of women recognize that a heart disease is their number 1 killer.

Heart disease is the leading cause of death for women in the United States, killing 299,578 women in 2017 – or about 1 in every 5 female deaths.

Heart disease is the leading cause of death for African American and white women in the United States. Among American Indian and Alaska Native women, heart disease and cancer cause roughly the same number of deaths each year. For Hispanic and Asian Pacific Islander women, heart disease is second only to cancer as a cause of death.

About 1 in 16 women age 20 and older (6.2%) have coronary heart disease, the most common type of heart disease. About 1 in 16 white women (6.1%), black women (6.5%), and Hispanic women (6%). About 1 in 30 Asian women (3.2%)

What are the symptoms of heart disease?

Although some women have no symptoms, others may have:

Angina (dull and heavy or sharp chest pain or discomfort)

Pain in the neck, jaw or throat

Pain in the upper abdomen or back

These symptoms may happen when you are resting or when you are doing regular daily activities. Women also may have other symptoms, including nausea, vomiting and fatigue.

Sometimes heart disease may be “silent” and not diagnosed until you have other symptoms or emergencies, including:

Heart attack: Chest pain or discomfort, upper back or neck pain, indigestion, heartburn, nausea or vomiting, extreme fatigue, upper body discomfort, dizziness and shortness of breath.

Arrhythmia: Fluttering feelings in the chest (palpitations)

Heart failure: Shortness of breath, fatigue or swelling of the feet, ankles, legs, abdomen or neck veins.

If you have any of these symptoms, call 911 right away.

What are the risk factors for heart disease?

High blood pressure, high LDL (low-density lipoprotein) cholesterol and smoking are key risk factors for heart disease. About half of all people in the United Sates (47%) have at least one of these three risk factors.

Several other medical conditions and lifestyle choices can also put people at a higher risk for heart disease, including:

Diabetes

Overweight or obesity

Eating an unhealthy diet

Physical Inactivity

Drinking too much alcohol

How can I reduce my risk of heart disease?

To lower your chances of getting heart disease, it’s important to do the following:

Know your blood pressure. Having uncontrolled blood pressure can lead to heart disease. High blood pressure has no symptoms, so it’s important to have your blood pressure checked regularly. Learn more about high blood pressure.

Talk to your doctor or health care team about whether you should be tested for diabetes. Having uncontrolled diabetes raises your risk of heart disease. Learn more about diabetes.

Quit smoking. If you don’t smoke, don’t start. If you do smoke, learn ways to quit.

Discuss checking your blood cholesterol and triglycerides with your doctor. Learn more about cholesterol.

Make healthy food choices. Being overweight or obese raises your risk of heart disease. Learn more about overweight and obesity.

Limit how much alcohol you drink to one drink a day. Learn more about alcohol.

Manage stress levels by finding healthy ways to cope with stress. Learn more about coping with stress.
