Arlene Sabo currently serves as the Director of Safety and Security at Vassar College in Poughkeepsie, NY. Sabo has worked in campus law enforcement for the past 30 years, serving as Chief of Police at SUNY Plattsburgh for the last 14 years. She holds a Masters Degree from SUNY Potsdam and is a graduate of the FBI National Academy in Quantico, Virginia. Sabo has served as a past president of the SUNY University Police Chiefs’ Association, and she is a current member of the New York State Association of Chiefs of Police and the International Association of Chiefs of Police. 

Susan Deshensky - MTA Police Department

Secretary

Susan Deshensky retired from the MTA Police Department as a Lieutenant, with 23 years of service. She worked in patrol for 19 years, both in Connecticut and New York and supervised the Medical Control Unit for 4 years. Susan previously served as the NYWLE Westchester/NYC regional representative and is currently the Southern Region Director, as well as the secretary.

Maura Gagan - NYS DCJS

Treasurer

Maura Gagan is a Criminal Justice Program Representative at the Division of Criminal Justice Services. She has been with DCJS since 2005 working with oversight of criminal history information and the submission of crime statistics. She is currently working in the grant unit where she monitors state and federal funds. Maura started her career as a Trial Preparation Assistant in the Manhattan District Attorney’s office.

Cathy Johansen - Peekskill PD (Ret.)

Immediate Past President

Cathy Johansen is a retired Lieutenant with the City of Peekskill Police Department whom maintains a strong connection to her career through her ties with New York Women in Law Enforcement. Cathy started with the Peekskill Police and worked her way up through the ranks while focusing on juvenile issues, sex crimes investigations and domestic violence and child abuse investigations. She developed one of the first community policing units in Westchester County with a strong emphasis on community, school, and government collaboration to educate its citizens on myriad topics to highlight the importance of involvement by all to ensure the health, welfare and safety of the community.
